I have very olive skin and dark brown hair and brown eyes. I look like an indian. My grandmother was Cherokee, but I didnt know this until after my dad died and my aunt told me.
I have been asked now by at least 3 or 4 over the years if I am indian. I dont know what to say. I feel stupid when they ask because I didnt even realize it until after my aunt told me.
How do I respond? I always knew I was dark skinned and had dark hair and eyes. The older I get the more I look like I just stepped of the tribe. Do I say, its none of your business or what? I dont really care, I just dont know what to say. I just feel like an American. By the way, my mother was blonde headed and blue eyed.
Have you ever been asked if your black, or indian or muslim etc?
Say "isn't it funny how focused people are getting on recent roots! My family on all sides have been in the US for generations, and we haven't tracked our branches before 1900."
I knew all four of my grandparents %26amp; several of my great-grandparents, and we never discussed ethnicity. We talked about cookies, ponies, etc. It's perfectly polite to tell people, "my background is mixed and my family has never been involved with genealogy or ethnic research. I know who my people were, but I don't know their racial blood types."

Tell them you're part Native American or that you're mixed and have Native American blood in you...people find that really interesting and it might start a conversation.

Happy, my Father was Cherokee 1/2 I believe, I've been told I'm 1/4, because my Mom was Irish and English. I have Blue eyes, but that's from Mom. I'm light skin and have good looking cheeks like an Indian. I have no trouble telling people who I am. Just tell them and the original American. No big deal, my friend! You take care! Jimmy.
