I am far from being black, but I can answer your question. It is smart to go to bootcamp with the easiest, least amount of effort and hair product hair style you can come up with. DO NOT worry because you are far from being alone with this situation. My RDC's back in the day were actually cool enough to let the black female get money together to buy some grease to help things out a little. DON'T count on this happening though. Also if you choose to go with extensions in and they do not meet female hair regulations you will be taken to the barber to cut them out. Not worth it at all so please find a hair style that can deal on it's own with little if any care for the 9 weeks you are there. You will be going to the pool to swim a few times and could find yourself marching a lot in the rain. You will be wearing a ball cap every single time you go outside. After boot camp you can do your hair normal again BUT you will need to choose a style that conforms to Navy female hair regulations. Best bet after boot camp is to find another conservative but still nice looking hairstyle until you get to your first command. Once you get to your first real command find a nice senior black female to take you under her wing so to speak to show you what is legal and what is not with different hair and nail styles. The last thing you want to do is get into real trouble for something as personal as hairstyles. I worked with a lot of black females and saw on a daily basis what they had to go through with hairstyles and it is rough, but you will find that there are a million things you can do to still be you but be within female uniform regulations. Good luck and welcome aboard.

Well, I'm not black, but most of my friends in the Navy were.. You can't have any sort of weave or fake hair in boot camp. Make sure you go to a stylist at home before you go to boot camp, because the barbers at RTC will screw up your hair. You can't use grease or perms.. the last couple days of boot camp our RDCs let us go to the NEX and buy make up and hair products. Otherwise, we all walked around looking goofy and nappy. Honestly, it will be the least of your concerns while you're there!

Once you get to A school, you'll be allowed to start styling your hair again. Only natural looking hair, braids are ok if they're conservative. You have to be able to put all your hair up above your color.

i was in the marines. no fake hair. u mostly have to french braid it into no more than two braids. i would suggest perming it right before u leave. and gel it down w/ some strong but clear gel. at paris island, there was a beauty salon, but perms were not suggested until after we took swim qualification for obvious reasons. u can take hairdress with you, but u have to wait until nighttime to use it. u may also be able to take a flatiron (i would suggest a maxiglide), but again, u will only have time to use it during the night.
